Osso bucco is a traditional Italian dish – hearty and warming, it’s the perfect winter comfort food. Executive Sous Chef of
NH The Lord Charles, Pieter Turpin, supplied the recipe.
Osso bucco
Osso Bucco is a Milanese speciality of veal shanks cooked in meat broth, flavoured with white wine and vegetables. Slowly braised, this relatively tough, but flavourful, cut of meat becomes meltingly tender, and the connective tissues and marrow dissolve into the sauce, making it rich and creamy. Literally translated from Italian, osso bucco means “hole bone” – a reference to the large chunk of marrow in the centre of the veal shank bone.

NH The Lord Charles Charity Ball
The annual NH The Lord Charles Charity Ball was held on Saturday, 29th May 2010. We are thrilled to report that – as always – the event was once again a huge success.
Created in 2005 by former General Manager, Erik Jansen, the Charity Ball is an annual event to raise funds for local charities, Imibala and the Erinvale Care and Help Organisation (ECHO). All food, wine, décor and prizes for the event are sponsored, and the money raised from ticket sales, auction items and donations on the evening are donated to these organisations.
This year’s Charity Ball raised the outstanding amount of R130, 000.00, which was shared equally by Imibala and ECHO. Imibala’s main focus is on helping disadvantaged children through primary school, while ECHO offers wide-ranging community support for the underprivileged in the Helderberg area, including educational opportunities and a feeding scheme.
Legendary South African personality, Soli Philander, was the MC for the evening. Guests were entertained by the very talented Gugulethu Tenors, who have been performing together since they left Fexeke High School eight years ago. They share a passion for opera – a bold music choice in a society infatuated with hip-hop and kwaito – and have performed for many dignitaries and VIP’s, including President Nelson Mandela.
